A Dutch-born, but later British, zoologist who shared (with Konrad Lorenz and Karl von Frisch) the 1973 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for studies of animal behaviour under natural conditions. Tinbergen was especially noted for his studies of social organization among gulls. He became Professor of Animal Behaviour at the University of Oxford in 1966, and Professor Emeritus in 1974.
