English deist. His Christianity as Old as the Creation, or the Gospel a Republication of the Religion of Nature (1730) is often described as the text-book of deism. He argued from the injustice of a special revelation to one people at one place and time, to a ‘primitive’ Christianity, free of specific dogma and available to all by the light of natural reason.
