A group of fungus infections of the skin. Tinea pedis, or athlete's foot, is the most common; tinea capitis, or ringworm, occurs mainly on the scalp, occasionally elsewhere on the body or in the groin. Another variety of tinea causes chronic paronychia, infection of the bed of the fingernails.
