Founded by St Bernard of Tiron (c.1046–1117), a former Benedictine monk of Poitiers, who became a hermit at Tiron (near Chartres), this Benedictine congregation was one of several ascetic communities established in the early 12th cent., of which the Cistercians were the most successful.
