US dance critic and writer. She studied at Barnard College and New York University beginning her long association with Dance Magazine in 1971, and becoming senior editor from 1983 to 1998. She was additionally dance critic of Soho News (1979–81) and New York Magazine (1980–2002) and consultant and writer to the Dance in America television series (1976–90). She taught dance criticism at Barnard College (1977–92) and, as a leading authority on the Danish ballet, initiated An Oral History of the Royal Danish Ballet and Its Bournonville Tradition. She has also written books for children while her books on dance include Maria Tallchief (1970) and Arthur Mitchell (1975).
