A technique of behaviour therapy sometimes used in hospitals and other institutions, in which inmates are given tokens (for example, poker chips) as reinforcement (1) for the performance of certain target behaviour patterns (such as dressing or speaking normally or interacting with other patients on the ward), the tokens later being convertible into privileges such as special foods, cigarettes, or access to television.
