The round of international trade talks under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade held in 1973–9. The round was named from its opening conference in Japan. It reached agreement on tariff cuts on most world trade in manufactures by about a third, implemented over the following five years. It failed to reach any agreement on agricultural protection or non-tariff barriers to trade.
