A multiprotein complex of the mitochondrial outer membrane (translocase of outer membrane) made up of eight different proteins. Tom40 (40 kDa, 362 aa) spans the outer membrane and forms a hydrophilic pore that permits proteins to pass. The other proteins are also embedded in the membrane, variously exposed on the cytosolic and inner faces. Compare Tom1.
