An orofacial muscular imbalance, due to a retained infantile pattern of swallowing in which the tongue is pushed forward against the anterior teeth. It may be characterized by mouth breathing, an open bite condition of the teeth, an open mouth posture when at rest, and difficulty with speech. Treatment is by muscular therapy or the provision of a preventive appliance.
