Of or pertaining to a convulsion or spasm characteristic of major epilepsy, beginning with a tonic convulsion lasting up to a minute, then a clonic convulsion for approximately a minute, often with clenched teeth, chewing movements, and loss of bladder or bowel control, then usually a period of relaxed unconsciousness followed by amnesia for the episode. Also called grand mal, tonoclonic. Compare absence.
