A spin, typically of a ball, during which the top of the spinning body travels forward and the bottom of the spinning body travels backward relative to the centre. The top spin modifies the angular rotation in a clockwise direction around the horizontal or transverse axis. When a ball is hit by a bat or some other implement, a top spin results from the hack of the ball (that is, the part in contact with the bat) being lifted upward and forward during the strike. Generally, the spin will make the ball come off another surface with a greater horizontal velocity than it possessed when it hit the surface, and the angle of reflection is also greater than if no spin had been imparted to the ball.
