Italian painter, born in Muralto-Locarno. He has worked principally in France. Since 1967, he has consistently painted according to a single programme. Single brushstrokes from the same size brush are placed at regular intervals of 30 centimetres. He was a member of the group BMPT, which also included Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset (1944– ), and Michel Parmentier (1938–2000), all trying to explore the material basis of painting. Although Toroni's painterly gesture has been consistent, he has used a variety of surfaces, not only canvases but also walls. Therefore the space and context is as much on exhibition as the painting. One example is a room on permanent display in the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
