The application of a pulling force. Extra-oral traction(EOT) is the process of applying a backwards (distal) pressure on the maxillary teeth during orthodontic therapy by the use of external headgear consisting of a facebow, headcap, or neckstrap and some form of force mechanism, usually a spring attached to a plastic tag. Extra-oral or external traction is also used for fracture reduction appliance therapy, with rigid connectors between points of fixation in the oral cavity and over the cranial area. Intra-oral (intermaxillary) traction(IOT) is the attachment of elastic bands or other devices to the upper and lower teeth in order to produce the force necessary to move teeth.
