Someone undergoing training. It has come to be used in preference to ‘student’ for learners on vocational programmes, and is part of the vocabulary of National Vocational Qualifications. It is also applied by government agencies such as the Training and Development Agency to student teachers. Its use raises the questions of how we define the difference between a student and a trainee and of whether there is a value judgement—for example, about status—implicit within the distinction between provision which is described as ‘education’ and that which is described as ‘training’.
