Antipsychotic drugs (formerly known as major tranquillizers) have this effect and are used to treat severe mental disorders (psychoses), including schizophrenia and mania. Anxiolytic drugs (formerly known as minor tranquillizers) are used to relieve anxiety and tension due to various causes.
