The facilitation or impairment of performance of a task resulting from prior training on a different but related task. Transfer tends to be positive when the two tasks involve different stimuli and similar responses, and it tends to be negative when the two tasks involve similar stimuli and different responses. When the two tasks involve different stimuli and different responses, there tends to be little or no transfer. See bilateral transfer, negative transfer, positive transfer.
