transitional ER

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

Adjacent to the side of the stack of cisternae closest to the nucleus in a Golgi body, a specialized patch of endoplasmic reticulum that has no bound ribosomes. Transitional ER sites often fuse with one another, but retain a constant average size, and tER is believed to give rise to cisternae that mature and move away, the tER permitting only correctly folded proteins to pass into the Golgi apparatus.
