A period of a training programme that allows an athlete to recover both physically and mentally following training or competition. During the transition period, there is a gradual reduction of training intensity, but the athlete continues to exercise to maintain a reasonable level of general fitness. Emphasis is usually on physical and emotional relaxation involving leisure pursuits. See also periodization.
