Quick Reference

Proteins (TMEFFs) that may be tumour suppressors or regulators of signalling in embryogenesis. Tomoregulin-1 (TMEFF1) is enriched in neuroendocrine tissue, TMEFF2 is mainly expressed in the prostate and brain and three splice variants, TRa, TRb, and TRc, have been described. TRa (368 aa) promotes the survival of hippocampal and mesencephalic neurons in primary culture but not survival of cortical neurons. The TMEFF2 gene is frequently hypermethylated in human tumour cells, and expression of TMEFF2 has been reported to inhibit prostate cancer cell growth.
