Any wave in which energy is transferred progressively in the direction of the wave propagation (in contrast to a standing wave); in particular a wave that is propagated from the oval window along the basilar membrane when the eardrum vibrates in response to a sound stimulus, the amplitudes of high-frequency components of the wave being greatest near the oval window and of low-frequency components furthest from the oval window.
