A term used in the context of an experimental design to refer to any prescribed combination of values of explanatory variables (see regression). In the original agricultural context a treatment was, for example, the application of a particular fertilizer. The term is particularly used in the context of balanced incomplete blocks, Latin squares, and randomized blocks. See also Friedman test.
