Former name of Trabzon, a port on the Black Sea in northern Turkey, which was founded by Greek colonists in 756 bc. Its ancient name was Trapezus. In 1204, after the sack of Constantinople by the Crusaders, an offshoot of the Byzantine Empire was founded with Trebizond as its capital, which was annexed to the Ottoman Empire in 1461.
