trefoil factor

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A family of stable secretory polypeptides with at least one trefoil motif that are thought to be proinvasive and angiogenic agents acting through cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2)- and thromboxane A2 receptor (TXA2-R)-dependent signalling pathways. Includes three members: TFF1 (pS2, 84 aa) is up-regulated by oestrogen in many breast carcinomas, TFF2 (spasmolytic peptide, 129 aa) and TFF3 (intestinal trefoil factor, 80 aa) are associated with mucin-secreting epithelial cells and play a crucial role in mucosal defence and healing. TFF3 may be a motogen.
