The tribes of Reuben, Simeon, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulan, Ephraim, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, who belonged to the Northern Kingdom in ancient Israel and who were exiled when the Northern Kingdom fell to the Assyrians in 722 bce, as told in the book of Kings (2 Kings 17, 18). Many legends circulated according to which the lost ten tribes established a new kingdom, across the mysterious River Sambation in some versions, and one day they will be returned. Travellers’ tales in the Middle Ages told of people who had managed to reach the lost tribes, returning with reports of their military prowess.
