Quick Reference

A group of drugs that were used to treat moderate to severe depression. They have adrenergic and serotonergic effects and probably work by inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin. They also decrease the effects of histamine on H1 receptors and have sedative effects. Have largely been replaced by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
