A class of organic chemical compounds that include chloroform and several chlorine plus bromine compounds, most of which have cumulative toxic properties if ingested in small quantities over prolonged periods. Some are metabolic breakdown products of organic matter in drinking water that has been chlorinated to kill pathogens. Long-term ingestion of chlorinated drinking water with high trihalomethane concentration is a suspected cancer risk.
