A family of small, blenny-like fish that have three dorsal fins, the first two having spiny rays. The tail fin is rounded, the anal fin is rather long, and the pelvics are reduced to a few free rays. There are distinct differences between the colour patterns of the sexes, only the males showing a black face. These fish tend to inhabit the rocky shores and coral reefs of tropical and subtropical seas. There are about 95 species, distributed world-wide.
