A genus of salamanders that are studied for their lampbrush chromosomes (q.v.). Species for which working chromosome maps are available include T. alpestris, T. cristatus, T. helveticus, T. italicus, T. marmoratus, and T. vulgaris. Another favorite, T. viridescens, has been renamed Notophthalmus viridescens (q.v.). See Classification, Chordata, Amphibia, Urodela.
