A protocol which is used to transfer files over the Internet. It is one of the simplest and fastest protocols for this, although it has severe limitations. The main one is that since it is based on the User Datagram Protocol there is no error checking: if an error occurs during a transfer, then the transfer normally fails completely. The main use for this protocol is for loading an operating system onto a computer in a network which does not already have an operating system installed and hence cannot make use of the powerful FTP protocol. See File Transfer Protocol and download. Often abbreviated to TFTP.
