Enzymes that function to alter the primary tRNA transcript, generally by adding a single methyl group to a base of the 2′- hydroxyl group of ribose. There are at least 45 different tRNA-modifying enzymes in E. coli, and about 1% of its genome is devoted to encoding these enzymes. See rare bases, transfer RNA.
