Pain over the bony prominence on either side of the upper thigh due to inflammation of the bursa, which is interposed between the greater trochanter towards the top of the femur and the overlying muscle. Trochanteric bursitis usually results from poor muscular coordination and an abnormal gait during running. See also Ober's test.
