Quick Reference

Abbreviation for Troubled Asset Relief Program: a US government initiative designed to restore market stability and revive bank lending in the wake of the subprime lending fiasco and the ensuing financial crisis. TARP enables the government to buy up to $700 billion of so-called troubled or toxic assets held by banks and other institutions, chiefly mortgages and complex instruments based on the securitization of mortgages. The programme was introduced in October 2008 but later underwent several major modifications.
