Canadian Liberal statesman, Prime Minister of Canada (1968–79; 1980–84). A committed federalist, Trudeau made both English and French official languages of the Canadian government (1969). During his second term, in 1980, a provincial referendum rejected independence for Quebec; Trudeau also presided over the transfer of residual constitutional powers from Britain to Canada in 1982.
