A small family of marine and freshwater fish that have an eel-like, compressed body, a blunt head with minute eyes, and long dorsal and anal fins which are confluent with the tail fin. They are usually found hidden in burrows in a muddy or gravelly sea-bottom in the warmer waters of Africa and the Indo-Pacific region. There are about 10 species.
