Quick Reference

In the US Navy during the days of sail, a light mast stepped aft of the mizzen-mast. The spanker, and sometimes the spencer, was set on it, and it was stepped in such a way that the stays from the spider band of the mizzen-mast did not interfere with its gaff or boom. It was sometimes called a snow mast, but see also snow.
