Quick Reference

A traditional bat-and-ball game played in the Alpine valley of Aosta. The batter from one team hits the ball as far as possible, to where the opposing team waits to catch it. Played predominantly by men in its traditional form, women and young girls have played the game since the 1990s. It was also one of the sports comprising a planned (1988) First Spring of South European games, designed to ‘show off…indigenous traditional games and sports’, to demonstrate the cultural distinctiveness of regions or territories not allied in any simple or even harmonious way with a national state (Henning Eichberg, Essays on Sport, Space and Identity, 1998).
