Quick Reference

Swelling and pain at the base of the big toe caused by the foot sliding forward in a shoe (e.g. when stopping suddenly on artificial turf). The big toe (see hallux) is bent upward, stretching the ligaments, injuring the articular surface and the joint capsule. Sliding of the foot in the shoe may also result in black nail and even a fracture of the toe.
