Archaic term for a member of the ruling Muslim population of the Ottoman Empire, or for a member of any of the ancient central Asian peoples who spoke Turkic languages, including the Seljuks and Ottomans; in extended usage, the name was applied to anyone regarded as showing the harshness or cruelty associated with the Turks by Western Europeans.
