In conversational turn-taking, declining the turn when it is offered by remaining silent, through the use of vocal back-channels (e.g. ‘uh-huh’, ‘mm-hmm’, ‘yeah’), or through nonverbal signals (gaze avoidance and aversion, relaxed posture, head nods and shakes, or smiles). See also regulators.
