Quick Reference

German architect and painter. He worked in Italy (1728–41), where he was influenced by Juvarra. After a brief period in London (1741–3), he was called to Copenhagen by King Christian VI of Denmark (1730–46) in 1743, where he worked mostly as a painter. Impressed by Tuscher's Abbecedario dell'Architettura Civile (Primer of Civil Architecture—1743), the King asked him to present plans for the Amalienborg, and it is probably because of Tuscher's influence on Eigtved that the Amalienborg Plads acquired its octagonal form and that the four palaces were articulated as pavilions and galleries.
