The system of moral theology according to which, in cases of doubt, the ‘safer opinion’ (i.e. that in favour of the moral principle) must be followed unless there is a degree of probability amounting to moral certitude in the ‘less safe opinion’ (i.e. that against the principle). It was condemned in 1690.
