The aldohexose 3,6‐dideoxy‐d‐mannose, 3,6‐dideoxy‐d‐arabino‐hexose, a monosaccharide of various lipopolysaccharides produced by some Gram‐negative bacteria, e.g. certain serotypes of Salmonella typhi, where it contributes to the antigenic specificity of the organism's O antigens. The l‐enantiomer is called ascarylose.
