(b c.1603; d Forlimpopoli, nr Forlì, 10 Sept. 1680). Italian composer and instrumentalist. He settled in Modena before 1639, two years later taking charge of the instrumental music at the Este court. He was maestro di cappella at the cathedral from 1647 to 1665, when he moved to the Farnese court in Parma. His seven printed volumes (one is lost) of sonatas, sinfonias, and dances, chiefly for violin(s) and continuo, establish important precedents for emerging genres of instrumental music. They also reach extreme heights of virtuosity.
