Quick Reference

Important and numerous early tribe/family of what is today eastern Co. Galway and southern Co. Roscommon. Although of non-Goidelic origin, they created a Goidelic pedigree which included descent from Maine Mór, son of Eochu. Their king Marcán was the husband of Créd (2), the lover of Cano. An Uí Maine king, Eochu Rond, does battle with Cúchulainn. The Book of Uí Maine, ed. R. A. S. Macalister (Dublin, 1942) is a late 14th-century miscellany containing genealogies and other materials. Hy Many is an anglicization.
