A learned man, who founded a school, educated and fed poor students, illuminated manuscripts, collected the writings of Brigid, and wrote a Life of her, is also said to have been bishop and apostle of the Desi of Meath. No Life of Ultan has survived, but there is a long notice in the Martyrology of Oengus and a poem in his praise. Feast: 4 September.
