A brilliant deep blue pigment originally obtained from lapis lazuli. The word comes (in the late 16th century) from medieval Latin ultramarinus ‘beyond the sea’; the name of the pigment is from obsolete Italian (azzurro) oltramarino, literally ‘(azure) from overseas’.
