The bull issued by Boniface VIII in his quarrel with Philip IV of France, declaring that there was ‘One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church’ outside which there was ‘neither salvation nor remission of sins’. It contained nothing new, but it brought to a point the growing claims of the Papacy and marks the zenith of medieval Papal ecclesiastical polity.
