A term for a person, often in the middle level of the educational system, who according to intelligence tests or other indicators should be capable of doing better than the examination results actually show. Similar criteria are used to label underachievers at later stages of life. The situation is sometimes explained by physical, emotional, or mental disorder and/or by social or cultural circumstances. It merits investigation and intervention when there is a significant level of underachievement.
