Quick Reference

A statistical indicator of the state of the nation's industrial economy. It is the proportion of the population eligible for and seeking work who are unemployed. Published statistics often dissect the total unemployment rate into age-specific rates and sometimes into other categories, such as occupational, regional, and ethnic groups. It can underrepresent reality when there are large numbers of unemployed who have given up searching for work.
