National flag of the United Kingdom. After his accession in 1603, James VI and I issued a flag of Great Britain with the red cross of St George (England), superimposed upon the saltire of St Andrew (Scotland) on a blue field. On the union with Ireland (1801), the diagonal red cross of St Patrick was added.
